General Description of Playa Blanca
Stretching more than 5 mls along the coastline, and less than ½ ml at its widest, this was once a tiny fishing village of which some older buildings and brightly coloured boats remain. In the tiny commercial centre, green-shuttered white buildings line the attractive waterfront walk, with its old-fashioned lampposts and pavement bars. The newer accommodation is scattered far and wide in purpose-built tourist "urbanizations", which are often more than strolling distance from the village.
Market/Suitability
One of the less developed resorts, suited to quiet family holidays.
Location/Contact
Location: At the S tip of the island, 18 mls SW of Puerto del Carmen, 26 mls SW of Arrecife, 21 mls SW of airport.
Position: On sloping ground backed by brown barren hills.
Accommodation
Predominantly mid-range self-catering establishments, plus a couple of budget pensions. The quality end of the market is growing, with 2 de luxe hotels and several large 4 stars.
Beach
Small, sandy town beach, with a few stony patches and low cliffs of black rock. Larger, man-made option at Playa Dorada. Playa Flamingo, on the opposite side of the port, has fine white sand. Safe for swimming, as enclosed by man-made groynes. The lonely beaches at Papagayo, 4½ mls over fairly rugged, unsurfaced road, are favoured by nudists.
Shopping
Supermarkets, gift shops; commercial centre by harbour. Limited choice.
Entertainment
Daytime: several ferries a day to Fuerteventura and Papagayo. Water sports. Scuba centre. Tour of the island using quad bikes.
Nightlife: subdued; some music bars.
Eating Out
Some tempting fish restaurants and bars near the waterfront; Chinese and Italian options at the harbour shopping centre. Some fast-food eateries; German and British restaurants.
Public Transport
Irregular bus service approximately once every 1 to 2 hrs (less frequent on weekends) to Arrecife. Car recommended.
Local Excursions
Fire Mountain (in the Timanfaya National Park); camel rides. Jameos del Agua caves; boat trips; jeep safaris. Day trip to Fuerteventura. See also Puerto del Carmen.
