Still a working town, important for tuna fishing, it now has a population of around 18,000 including various expat communities. The most attractive part is undoubtedly the old town with its narrow, winding streets, churches and pedestrianised area, all of which ooze charm. The town's long history is reflected in many of the older buildings, and the old town itself is flanked by the walls of an old fortress that dates back to Roman times. Gold, silver, ivory and slaves were once traded here. Much of the town had to be rebuilt after the 1755 earthquake. Today, the central hub is surrounded by more modern residential and hotel developments including a large marina.
