General Description of Qawra
A more recently developed tourist area that spreads from Salina Bay as far as Bugibba. Highly built up with somewhat smarter shops and amenities than in neighbouring resorts, mostly along the bustling sea front which is lined with blocks of look-alike apartment buildings.
Market/Suitability
Extremely popular with the budget-conscious, particularly older couples although the Qawra coast is also more upmarket.
Location/Contact
Location: 11 mls NW of Valletta and 12 mls from the airport.
Position: On the NE coast between St Julian's and Mellieha, part of a large promontory overlooking Salina Bay.
Accommodation
A vast choice of hotels and self-catering apartments. Many aparthotels and complexes allow the independence of self-catering but with the facilities of a hotel.
Beach
No sandy beaches in the area, but good bathing from large, flat rocks or the hotels' seaside lidos. Water sports available. The nearest sandy beach is at Golden Bay, 5½ mls away.
Shopping
Bugibba is the main shopping centre, offering the usual range of tourist souvenirs.
Entertainment
Daytime: water sports and horse riding in Qawra.
Nightlife: Bugibba is the main centre of activity, with discos and karaoke bars, but each area has its own bars and cafes, and the larger hotels hold barbecues and entertainment; a couple of the hotels in Qawra have nightclubs.
Eating Out
All the area is well provided with tourist cafes and simple restaurants. Old St Paul's Bay offers a choice of good, more sophisticated dining.
Public Transport
Frequent buses to most parts of the island from the Bugibba bus terminus.
Local Excursions
Cruises from Bugibba. Otherwise, as Valletta.
