General Description of Schladming
Often referred to as one of the most beautiful ski-destinations in Austria, this small, compact town – measuring around 1¼ mls from E to W and with around 5,000 inhabitants – has a long history, with first records dating back to 1322. Despite its prominence as a skiing centre, Schladming retains a strong flavour of its past with many historical monuments and buildings of interest, including some which are now hotels. The main shops, restaurants and bars are concentrated around Hauptplatz; ski-schools and sports shops cluster around the Planai lift station to the E of the town.
Market/Suitability
A range of nationalities, but particularly popular with German and Austrian skiers. Suitable for all grades of skier; families are well catered for. Also a summer destination.

Location: In central Austria, in the mountainous Dachstein-Tauern region. 59 mls SE of Salzburg and its airport. 200 mls SW of Vienna. 60 mls E of Zell am See.
Position: Nestled around a fork in the River Enns, at the foot of the Planai Mountain. One of several interlinked resorts strung along the Enns Valley and surrounded by the Dachstein-Tauern Mountains.

Accommodation
A full range from 4-star hotels to pensions and self-catering apartments. Many hotels are converted historical buildings. Camping facilities in summer.
Shopping
Numerous shops including supermarkets, sports and fashion shops, exclusive designer boutiques, souvenirs/local handicrafts and hairdressers, mainly centred in and around the Hauptplatz. Colourful shopping centre is just off this street.
Entertainment
Daytime: a full range of winter-sports activities including sleigh rides and ice-skating; indoor adventure swimming pool; tennis; squash; bowling; hot-air balloon rides; exploring the town including the remains of the old city walls and gate, several interesting churches and the local history museum. Additionally in summer, walking; horse riding; 18-hole golf course (designed by Bernhard Langer); mountain biking with trails and bike hire; summer tobogganing track; river rafting.
Nightlife: several lively bars and discos with occasional live music; magnificent floodlit toboggan run.
Eating Out
A wide variety from inexpensive cafes and pizzerias to a la carte restaurants serving traditional and international cuisine. The local Schladming beer is not to be missed. A good choice of mountain huts and restaurants for lunch-time meals on the pistes.
Public Transport
Ski-buses serving Schladming and the surrounding ski-areas are free with a valid lift pass. Also plentiful local buses and a rail service from town to nearby resorts, Salzburg and farther afield. Four taxi firms.
Local Excursions
Limited in winter to exploring the town and the surrounding area; Salzburg for shopping and sightseeing (full day). In summer, full day: tours by mountain bike; Dachstein ice caves; Grossglockner high alpine pass. Two days: Innsbruck; Vienna.
